La Fontaine

October 28, 2002 - 3:00 p.m.

The radio station here is great, a little more alernative than usual, which for me means Kate Bush, INXS, the Bangles, etc. Okay, not really alternative at all, just refreshing somehow.

A couple of tables down, a red-haired woman was reading Madame Bovary, stopping and starting it up again every few minutes, distracted by something.

The tables are wooden with hard brown cloudy surfaces. The chairs are wooden, but on the edges of the place are red couches. The heavy round ashtrays are uniformly wide and black, but the logos alternate: MoovSpot, Marlboro, and something I don't recognize that probably begins with an "M" as well. The sugar came in cube form in a blue packet; the espresso came in a wide tan cup on a tan saucer.

Felix the Cat sleeps in a hammock in between the numbers of the clock on the wall. A guitar, saxaphone and black hat hang near the neon Heineken sign over one part of the bar. And flat turtles hang in the center of each half of the room. Apparently they light up, but for the moment, with adequate light coming in from outside, they are asleep and dark, like enigmatic shadows floating beneath the amber sea of the ceiling.
